Pontian History & Culture
Pontos, or Pontus, is a historic region located on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Known for its rich history and vibrant culture, Pontos was home to an ancient Greek civilization that flourished for centuries. The Pontian people are renowned for their distinct language, music, and traditions, which have been preserved and passed down through generations.
Despite facing hardships, including the forced displacement and genocide of Pontian Greeks in the early 20th century, the Pontian diaspora has kept their heritage alive. Today, Pontian communities around the world, like ours here in Philadelphia, continue to celebrate their unique identity through music, dance, cuisine, and language.
